William Ellis is a renowned music photographer based in Manchester, England. In 2008 William was commissioned by the Bridgewater Hall to document the artistic goings-on at Manchester’s finest music venue. William has captured a multitude of different shots, with some pictures demonstrating the grandeur and immensity of the performance area itself, and other more intimate shots of artists backstage, pre-performance. What William has managed to deliver is a collection of images that give a truly detailed insight into the fundamental nature of live music performance, whilst showcasing the beauty of this great venue. The exhibition contains shots of many great artists, such as Buena Vista Social Club, Joan Baez and Herbie Hancock.

The Bridgewater Hall is a music venue that is very dear to me. I have been fortunate enough to witness fantastic live performances from both Morrissey and Ray Davies there in recent years and the sound inside is absolutely faultless. It allows the audience to enjoy every nuance of the music and my experiences at the Bridgewater will live long in the memory. It was particularly obvious at the Morrissey concert  in 2006 having seen him perform a few weeks prior at Salford’s Lowry Centre. The sound in the Lowry was superb and I genuinely thought it would turn out to be the most impressive at any Morrissey concert in my life, but I was wrong. The Bridgewater Hall was on another level and I will always be grateful to the venue for allowing me to hear my musical hero in such crystal clear clarity. It is also a beautiful building, with a stunning facade that has added so much to the architectural development of Manchester. William’s latest body of work has contributed to my enthusiasm for this great venue and it has increased my understanding of its significance. This exhibition is well worth seeing.

Prints are available to purchase from William Ellis’ online gallery and there is a slideshow of the work available on the BBC website.
