Preview: Grimes – The Ritz, Manchester, 30.08.2012

Claire Boucher, aka Grimes, is a Canadian songwriter who doesn’t fit neatly into traditional music categorisation. Her extraordinary vocals and ability to write pop melodies means she stands on her own in the world of new music.

2012 has been her year. Late 2011 saw her she sign to 4AD and it’s proven to be a great match. Her third album Visions has propelled her into the public consciousness, with BBC 6 Music adopting her as their own and critical acclaim coming thick and fast. However, it was a sensational performance on Jools Holland which really made her a household name, with a stunning performance of Genesis making us all sit up and take note. Grimes is the real deal.

Back in May, she was booked to play Islington Mill in Salford but demand was so huge that it sold out in a matter of minutes. Never wanting to disappoint, Manchester’s finest promoters Now Wave quickly rebooked her for a gig at Sound Control in order to satisfy demand. Once again, it sold out, meaning more disappointed fans not getting the chance to see her. Luckily, it has been moved to the larger capacity Ritz venue, meaning some tickets are still available. My advice would be to grab one soon before they sell out again.
