Game Over for Romney

Just when you thought Mitt Romney had decided to stop entertaining us with his campaign trail gaffes he goes and delivers his finest one to date. Polls were suggesting that his message was already struggling to cut through to voters, with Obama establishing healthy leads in the majority of swing states. But a secret video, filmed and released by Mother Jones, has surely confirmed what we already suspected – Mitt Romney will not be elected US President in November.

In a rare moment of honesty and straight talking, Romney is filmed at a private fundraiser saying to donors:

There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what…These are people who pay no income tax … [M]y job is is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.

The damage of this could be fatal for Romney’s election chances. Pitching yourself against almost half the population you are attempting to secure votes from is political suicide for obvious reasons. The hypocrisy of his comments regarding tax is staggering, given his reluctance to to release his tax information in the past.

This man is astonishingly inept. Any fears that he would wonder into the White House because of a tanking US economy have now surely been allayed. Credit to Mother Jones for what is an incredibly brave and important piece of political journalism.
